From the beginning, the GeekSouth website has been open for anyone to create an account on. But now, let’s try to actually do something with that.

I’ve slapped a few plugins onto our Wordpress install and hacked around on a few things to slowly start created usable “Member” pages. You can add links to your webpages, IM accounts, some details about yourself, and even setup an actionstream. Check out my page for a rough example as it stands right now.

I’ve got some more work to do, but want to get around to making this list easily searchable… a “Find A Geek” directory if you will.

So, whenever you get a sec login to the site (or create an account if you don’t have one) and fill in your details.

The GeekSouth website now understands OpenID, both for user logins and for leaving comments. If you’ve got an OpenID (and odds are you do even if you don’t know it), you can now use that to either signup for an account here or add it to your current account so that you can login to the site using it.

What is an OpenID?

Existing Users

First, you need to login to the GeekSouth website using your current username & password. Once logged in, you should see a section on the left-hand menu called Users which will have an optioned titled Your OpenIDs.

You can then add your OpenID.

Note: This will set the website in your profile to your OpenID url as a security measure mandated by the plugin.

New Users

Head over to the Registration Page, and instead of entering a username & email insert your OpenID in the OpenID field. Once you are authenticated with the OpenID provider you will be taken to the Wordpress Profile page so that you can fill in the rest of your information.

By default, new users to the site are not allowed to make blog posts. If you’ve got something you’d like to post email geeksouth@gmail.com and let us know.

Your OpenID?

As I said, you most likely have an OpenID even if you do not realize it. Following is a list of example OpenIDs:

openid.aol.com/yourname

yahoo.com

google.com/accounts/o8/id

yourname.wordpress.com

yourname.blogspot.com

yourname.livejournal.com

flickr.com

yourname.vox.com

Help?

Email geeksouth@gmail.com if you run into anything odd. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as we can.

It has been quite a while since the first GeekSouth meeting went down (December 21, 2005!!!). When things first started coming together we quickly slapped up this Wordpress blog, the forum, and the wiki.

Honestly the forum and the wiki never got off the ground. The wiki was plagued with wiki-spam, and comments to the forum were just a small trickle. This main page, beyond a few odd posts here and there, really served as a way to announce meetings.

So we ask you geeks, what would you want to see happening on www.geeksouth.com? Is it just fine to keep the blog to announce the meetings because the meetings are where the fun happens? Or do you want something bigger and better here. I’ve created a forum thread (link) for us to discuss thing. Please throw your 2 cents in because it does count.

If you don’t have a forum account, and don’t feel like creating one post a comment here or e-mail Austin and he’ll sling it up for you.

Update: Ben Collins has started some ideas flowing on the Forum. We need your ideas!
