The end of the analog television era has been years in the making, but enough uncertainty abounds that Congress has pushed off the transition date, requiring broadcast companies to justify their switch to digital on the original February 2009 date.

Tim Siglin, contributing editor for Streaming Media magazine will separate fact from fiction on the television switch as well as provide details on the various standard- and high-definition formats that many broadcasters are moving to. We’ll talk about 720p, 1080i/p, H.264 and the potential for web delivery of live HD content.

Also on hand will be Dave Sieg of ZFx to comment about the issues we are facing here in the Tri-Cities with receiving Over The Air HDTV.

The April 2009 GeekSouth meeting will happen on April 30th at 7:00pm at Kingsport Grocery in Kingsport, TN. Kingsport Grocery is located at 453 East Main Street in Kingsport, TN (google map). Look for us on the 2nd floor.

From the beginning, the GeekSouth website has been open for anyone to create an account on. But now, let’s try to actually do something with that.

I’ve slapped a few plugins onto our Wordpress install and hacked around on a few things to slowly start created usable “Member” pages. You can add links to your webpages, IM accounts, some details about yourself, and even setup an actionstream. Check out my page for a rough example as it stands right now.

I’ve got some more work to do, but want to get around to making this list easily searchable… a “Find A Geek” directory if you will.

So, whenever you get a sec login to the site (or create an account if you don’t have one) and fill in your details.

Several people requested it, so we are booked for Ole Chile in Johnson City at 7:00pm on December 16th. Ole Chile is located right next door to Bailey’s at 2102 North Roan Street.

Please head over to this link and add your name to the list so I can tell the guys at Ole Chile how many to expect. Hope to see everyone out, bring someone new!

Earlier on in the year we decided to take a GeekSouth meeting on this road and move it over to Asheville, NC to mingle with the Meet The Geeks folks. So that is exactly what the September GeekSouth meetup with be…

About Meet The Geeks:

Meet the Geeks is an all-volunteer organization focused on providing a common contact point for the IT industry in North Carolina. Projects range from casual socializing at bi-monthly get-togethers to the development the Meet the Geeks website which includes the IT Directory and Forums. Our goal is to build a network of professionals across the all IT sectors – from development to recruiting, programming to capital – that promotes relationships and the cross-pollenization of ideas that will foster growth in Western North Carolina.

Their September meeting will be Wednesday, September 24th from 5:30 to 7:30 at Scully’s in Downtown Asheville (see below for map).

From my fellow GeekSouth folks I need two things:

First → RSVP if you are going or thinking about it so I can let the Meet The Geeks people know. You can do this by posting a comment on this writeboard page (password geeks).

Second: → Considering the distance and price of fuel we need to make a big effort to carpool. Please see the Writeboard page linked in #1 to discuss.

And what’s that you say? A post in August about the September GeekSouth meetup? Austin made a New Year’s Resolution to try and plan these events further in advance… too bad it took him until the end of August for it come into reality
