While at this event there will have to be some discussion about the meetings for the remainder of the year. It has grown increasingly difficult to keep the meetings going monthly. Our discussion will about shifting to a bi-monthly meeting or perhaps quarterly. Be thinking of this and be prepared to discuss.

Adventures of a corporate digital librarian

In the 1990’s, most organizations thought that a search engine like Google would allow employees to find everything on their networks.  Now, a growing number recognize that search is only part of the solution.  Jean Graef, of  The Montague Institute, will discuss how she helps cross-functional corporate teams create and customize systems that make documents and human experts quickly and easily accessible.

Please come one, come all to the February 2009 GeekSouth meetup.  This meetup will be held on Tuesday, February 24th at Pepper Jack Grille in Bristol, VA (click here for directions).  Start time is the normal 7:00pm.

It was decided that the first meeting of 2009 will be a review of the decisions made at the planning meeting for those who were not able to attend so that we can look forward to all the cool things coming. Also, this will be a “working meeting” so come armed with ideas and laptops so that we can tweak various things dealing with the GeekSouth website.

What about food you say?!? Several of us are planning to order delivery from Mid City Grill.

If you want to order food from Mid City, please check out the menu (found here).  Sam Mays and myself are offering to go pick the food up right at 7.  If you want us to pick up the food for you, you must do two things.

1. Email your order to geeksouth@gmail.com before 5pm on the 29th.  At 5pm I will be forwarding the order to Jeff @ Mid City.

2. Be there at 7, with enough cash in hand to cover your order.  I’m not taking everyone’s debit/credit cards with me, also will be a pain to do exact change so if you give me .73 more than your order that will just be a tip for the cook!

If you would rather, you can paypal enough money to cover your order to Austin (paypal email: austin.moody@gmail.com) and he will just slap it on his card.  Either way.

You can always just call in your own order and go nab it yourself.  Either way is fine.

Emailing in an order and not showing/paying is bad mojo and will cause Buffalo Mountain to catch on fire again.  You don’t want that haunting your dreams to you?

At this GeekSouth meeting (July 23, 2008) we will be discussing Linux, Open Source programs, Open Source programs that have been ported for windows, and how the these programs can be used as a cost effective alternative to windows and windows based programs.  The presentation will be given by Ben of Benzi Computers (www.benzicomputers.com).

Leveraging Flash as a desktop development platform great for startups and mature businesses who need graphical interactive experiences at a fraction of the cost of custom developments.  I’ll be showcasing the software I managed (computer games for speech language pathologists) and how I helped start the company with accompanying business services including printing and disc manufacturing.

We will be meeting at Fun Expedition in Johnson City.  That’s right.  Fun Expedition.  Batting cages, Go-Carts, the whole works.  Make sure you come ready for some Geek Laser Tag.

Don’t forget to join us this Thursday March 20, 2008 for a presentation given by Nathan King. Nathan is the CEO/Chief Architect at JETPAC.tv, LLC.

He will be telling us Geeks all about sites like Quik, Seesmic, and currentTV. I am sure we will also hear a little something about JETPAC!

Topic for this Geek South dinner will be application of video into media companies at large. We will explore Nathan’s thoughts on the future of video and where it’s headed (more mobile, more interactive, desktop oriented, and more niches).

The Geek South Dinner will be held on a THURSDAY this month. Be sure to make note of this as Geeks tend to keep habits and we have been meeting on Tuesdays for the past two years.
