Geeks and Artists

What do you get when you put a bunch of geeks together in a restaurant with WIFI? Contrary to popular belief, geeks are social animals too! We just spout acronyms and URLs and have to have a net-connected laptop within arms-reach to show off our latest discoveries. If you haven’t experienced it, please plan to join us for the next GeekSouth Dinner October 24th at 7 pm at On Fifth in Bristol.

Now, I’m not trying to suggest you miss our GSD, but…
What do you get when you mix a bunch of geeks with media artists? Asheville’s Meet The Geeks has been experimenting with this fascinating new concept. They call it “Liquefaction”, and wouldn’t you know they are having it the same date GeekSouth is meeting here in the Tri-Cities! Here’s their spiel:

The future of Asheville lies in the collaboration of geeks and artists helping to effectively discover, analyze and communicate ideas and insights by unlocking data, improving networks & communication, and developing new tools for working together.

Join us for this unique collaboration event where artists and geeks share their passions with each other to open doors to new possibilities in creativity and business. Find out what happens when the worlds of digital media and geekdom collide.

Demonstrations will show how geeks and artists can help each other to build new businesses and create mindblowing art. Computers will be on hand to create interactive collaborations with “processing”, a language that both artists and geeks can love. Come join the discussion and spur new ideas.

Now I’ve got a feeling the Liquefaction Cash Bar (what a concept!) is just gonna be getting interesting at 7:30. So its pretty much either/or. Tough choice!

But I really do think a mixture of geeks and media artists could produce some awesome possibilities. Considering how many talented artists we have here at ETSU’s Digital Media Center, (and how many Great Geeks we have) this is too good a concept for us NOT to blend our own special salsa. Think about it, Geeks!
